Last thing on, first thing off!
Keep in mind that sterling silver and gold plated jewelry are susceptible to many environmental elements that can accelerate the tarnishing process. Therefore, you should do everything possible to eliminate contact with perfumes and creams, household chemicals, water (salt and chlorinated), and even sweat. Please also be mindful that excessive sun and heat may also hasten oxidation, and therefore you should always store your jewelry in a soft pouch or jewelry box away from light and moisture.
How to Clean
The simplest way to avoid premature tarnish is to regularly clean your jewelry with a soft cloth, even after wearing each time. While this should help to maintain the shine and condition of your jewelry, tarnish will eventually occur. Try the following cleaning methods depending on the level of tarnish removal required.
Light Cleaning
- If your jewelry begins to look dull, place it in a bowl with a drop of light dish soap and warm water.
- After soaking for a few minutes, remove from the water and carefully and thoroughly use a soft cloth to rub clean. Ensure the jewelry is fully dried prior to placing back in its pouch or jewelry box.
- Alternatively, a high-quality jewelry polishing cloth can quickly restore the shine by removing minimal buildups of dirt and tarnish.
Deeper Cleaning
- If your jewelry requires more attention, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of salt in an aluminum foil-lined bowl (shiny side facing up). Add enough hot water and allow the mixture to dissolve.
- Submerge your jewelry in the soda and salt solution. Your jewelry will be safe because you are not rubbing it against any abrasive materials. A chemical reaction will take place, which removes the flecks of tarnish from your jewelry. You may notice a slight smell of sulfur.
- After several minutes, remove your jewelry, rinse with warm water, and gently rub with a dry cloth.
